MAKWANDE ART INITIATIVE: Rest, Create, Rise: A Residency for African and Diasporic Women Artists in the South of France

About Makwande Art initiative

Founded by Nomaza Nongqunga Coupez, the Makwande Art initiative is a non-profit contemporary visual art organisation dedicated to nurturing the creative expression of emerging African and diasporic women artists. Rooted in the Nguni word “Makwande”let there be growth—our mission is to foster artistic exploration, cultural enlightenment, and personal restoration.

Located in the South of France, on the tranquil edge of the Mediterranean Sea, Makwande offers more than just a workspace. It is a sanctuary where artists are given time, space, and support to think deeply, create freely, and connect meaningfully. Here, we honor the importance of both creative risk and self-care, encouraging residents to discover balance between work and wellness.

Our international residency program champions equality in the arts, empowering women from Africa and its global diaspora to push boundaries, realize projects, and amplify their voices on the global stage. We support artists in building sustainable creative practices while encouraging critical conversations within the emerging contemporary art landscape.

Makwande is where stories unfold, visions expand, and communities grow—a space designed to cultivate not only art, but the artists themselves.
